How to Prepare the House for Christmas

Decorating the tree, wrapping the presents, and getting as stuffed as a Thanksgiving turkey. That is right, it is that time of the year again and Christmas is just around the corner. However, before you fill your home with all kinds of decorations and get the nicest tree you can find, you need to prepare your home for the upcoming holiday season. Since the end of December can get very busy very quickly, it is best to get an early start on things. If you have no idea where to begin, this list might help you get organized and prepare everything on time.

Get rid of things you do not use anymore

Before you and your family get a bunch of new things, you need to make room for them. And how will you do that? Easy, by getting rid of old things you do not need anymore. Take those toys your kids donโ€™t play with anymore, clothes no one wears, and items that are just collecting dust and put them in three piles – to sell, to give to charity, and to throw away. When your home is clutter-free, you can start cleaning.

Time for deep cleaning

When you put up your Christmas tree and all your favorite ornaments, cleaning will become much harder. Therefore, after you have gotten rid of the clutter and before you start to decorate, clean your home from the floor to the ceiling. Vacuum, dust, scrub floors and windows, and wash all those cushions from the living room. Even those decorative lamps orย animal skull artย you have hanging deserve a thorough cleaning. Since during this season visitors will be coming and going, you need to make sure that the sink, toilet, and other bathroom fixtures are spotless as well.ย

Stock the freezer

When you are preparing a planned family dinner for all your relatives, you will do all your shopping on time. However, during the holidays you will surely have unplanned guests and therefore be forced to make a last-minute meal. For these situations it is wise to have a stocked freezer with a few baked goods or BBQ-friendly meats.

Do an inventory

Before your guests start to arrive, you need to make sure that you have everything you need to welcome them properly. Therefore, check whether you have enough wine glasses and that your plates have survived all the previous holidays. Are your sheets and towels still nice or are they ready to be promoted to cleaning rags? Also, pay attention to bigger items as well. Should you replace the mattress in the guestroom? Have you fixed the broken springs in the living room sofa? Ensure that everything is in order before the big day.

Check your garden

During the warmer days when we spend more time outside, we always make sure that our yard is looked after. However, as the weather gets colder we usually neglect the garden. Before you focus on decorations, water your plants, pull weeds, collect fallen leaves, rake, and sweep. If there is not enough time, just concentrate on the entry area.

Focus on the decorations

Now when your home is spotless and your yard looks amazing, it is time to check your decorations. See which ones you love and which ones look like they are ready to retire in the garbage bin. Also, see whether you want a new theme or you are happy with the old one. When you know exactly what you want you will be able to make wise decoration purchases instead of buying everything shiny and ending up with an eclectic mix you hate.

Prepare for winter

An inevitable part of preparing your house for Christmas is getting it ready for winter in general. Therefore, check your door and window seals and see whether everything is in order. Buy new draft excluders and throw a couple of cozy blankets on the sofa. A few scented candles around the living room can give it that warm and Christmassy vibe you are aiming for.

Now when everything is in order and you are prepared even for unexpected guests, you can relax and enjoy the festive season.
