Give Extra: I Spy Christmas Ornament

Shake and share this holiday season with an I Spy ornament. Gather your favorite little ones, extra packs of gum, and anything sparkly you can find. Let's create and gift easy I Spy ornaments to celebrate those very important people in our lives: the little ones who make our hearts happy!

While it might be easy to impress a little one with toys or candy for holiday gifts, I think homemade surprises are much more fun. It's even better when they get to help create the gift! One idea I have for this year is to host a crafty Christmas party. While an art and crafts get together can be appropriate for all ages, it would be a great surprise for those who like to create and their parents. Imagine their delight as you announce that you will dedicate an entire afternoon to everything glittery, sparkly and fun? Sweet treats are required and everyone can pitch in and try something creative. Consider it a “make and take.” Your favorite little ones will make and take their creations and as the party hostess, you supply the inspiration, the Extra gum, and the confetti!

Just what exactly is an I Spy ornament? Well, it's a clear ornament filled with whatever you'd like. The idea is to “hide” things among cotton, confetti, glitter, or whatever you can dream up. For this project, I knew I wanted to use gum wrappers since they are easy to find, sparkly, and little hands LOVE to pull apart the gum and the wrapper.

My little helper was ALL about organizing the gum wrappers and confetti.

The bare minimum requirements for this craft include a clear ornament (which you can find just about anywhere!), Extra gum and wrappers, and some kind of special toy or item to hide inside the ornament. Sometimes you can find clear ornaments at a craft store or you can find them in the stocking stuffer aisle. Clear ornaments are used for all sorts of things (including to hold socks!) so pick up whatever you can find and use the insides for something else.

Use scissors to carefully cut gum wrappers into thin strips. These sparkly foil wrappers are a fun and easy way to add filling to your ornament.

We then used snowflake confetti to “hide” inside. With Frozen being such a big deal this time of year, I like to consider this my Frozen ornament! Full of snowflakes, glitter, and sparkle. My son helped crinkle the strips and had fun throwing the confetti all over the floor before adding it to the ornament.

It's an easy DIY that can be the star of your next craft party. Consider gifting something extra to those special people in your lives. Something small and meaningful can show someone just how much you care!
