It’s an amazing feeling to be able to do this, but we can also understand that it can be massively overwhelming. Building a whole house is a huge task to take on, and it can be tough to get through the long process. There are going to be things that go wrong, there are going to be days where you want to give up on the whole project, but you’ve got to stand strong.

However, we also want to note that there will be times where you are not able to change the design, so it’s always best to ensure that you are 100% happy with what you have decided before you move forward.

The best way to do this is to create a plan, then sleep on it for a while, then approve it. Sometimes ideas can be fleeting, and we think that we love them but we just love them in the moment, not for the rest of our lives. In order to really know what you want, try to stick with the ideas that you have had for a long time, as they are obviously staying around for a reason. These lingering thoughts are likely the best ones that you’ve got.

Set Your Budget In Stone

It’s all well and good to have an idea of what you want, but you also need to make sure that it is possible with your budget. Of course everyone’s budgets are going to be slightly different, and you have to ensure that you are tailoring your home to the budget that you have available. Some people decide to wait until they have all of the money to build the property, and others don’t. Seeing as it is going to be such a long process, some people know that they are going to make more money and have more money by the time that you need to pay again. While we understand this line of thinking, that doesn’t mean that it’s the right one.

Ideally, you should never bank on money that you do not actually have at the moment, as this is a dangerous game to play. You can never be certain about what you are going to have in the future, you can only be certain of what you have available right now. It’s for this reason that we recommend only using what you have got to set your budget. You can adjust it as time goes on if you like and if needed, but initially, keep it to what you know you can afford.

Talk To Different Professionals

Throughout this process, you are going to need so many different professionals on your side that it’s not even funny. You are going to need an electrician, a great plumber, plasterers, carpenters, roofers, and so many more that it can make your head spin. The best way to make this happen is to make a list, and then go through the list one at a time. Do your research on Google by looking at the website for various professionals, check out their reviews, see if they have a portfolio depending on what they do, and so much more. The more that you research, the better idea that you get about the professional and what they are all about. If you are thinking of hiring them, then you need to get in touch with them, tell them what you need, when you’re going to need it, ask for advice if necessary, and get a quote. 

Ideally, you want to get a few different quotes from a few different professionals so that you get a good idea of an average cost. Just because you’re building your own home, doesn’t mean that you want to overpay for services, especially when you’re already paying out so much! 

Don’t just go off of cost though. You need to go off of the vibes that they give you. Do they make you feel comfortable? Do they feel professional? Do you think that they are going to do a good job? It’s things like this that matter, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. 

Are There Parts You Want To Do Yourself?

Are there parts of building your home that you want to do yourself? Some people like to have a hand in this, especially if there are parts that they know they would be good at doing. There’s something special about being able to say that you built part of your home, or that you had something to do with it that wasn’t just the planning and financial side of things. For example, if you are a painter, then you may want to paint the entire interior yourself rather than having someone else do it. Or, if you fancy your hand at certain parts of the building, then you can do that too. 

Work out all the things that you want to do yourself, and this then gives you a better idea of who you need to hire for the other parts anyway. We want to say here that there is no pressure to do anything in your home if you do not want to. Some people just like to hire the professionals to do it all and they like to stay out of the way which is completely fair we think! But, if you do want to get involved, then you can. The choice is yours, and there is no right or wrong answer.

Start Working Out A Time Frame

In order to keep everything organised, you want to work out a time frame for how long it’s going to take to build your home. You have to be prepared that it takes a long time to make this happen, so don’t expect it to take a few short months, as this is not realistic. The minimum that you are looking at is going to be around 6 months, and that doesn’t include if there are any delays, if things go wrong, or potentially just because things got delayed. Sometimes these projects can go on for over a year, but you want to get the initial timeline sorted for your own peace of mind.

On average, you’re probably looking at something around nine to twelve months. Once you’ve got that sorted, you should know roughly when you can move into your home. Of course, if there are delays in the process, then you need to adjust your time scale accordingly. 

Hire An Interior Designer

The final thing that we’re going to mention is that you should hire an interior designer. The reason that we didn’t put this with hiring the other professionals is because it’s not part of building the house, it’s part of decorating it so that it looks lovely for you to live in. The reason that we recommend doing this is because you’ve spent so much money to create your dream house, you want it to look the way that it does in your head, but sometimes this can be tricky. An interior designer can bring your ideas to life, ensuring that you have nothing short of perfection for you.

We know that things get tough sometimes, especially if they are not going according to plan, but that’s okay. Just try to remind yourself how amazing it is that you get to build your home from scratch, ensuring that it is everything that you have always wanted in a home. Not everyone is able to have this opportunity, and it’s amazing for you that you are able to do this. So, no matter how tough it gets, you’ve always got that.
