Buffalo Plaid Mason Jar Candles
Easy craft ideas for simple gifting! Try this buffalo mason jar DIY!
Upgrade your home decor or create an easy gift with a mason jar! You know I have a thing for mason jars already, but this buffalo checked mason jar tutorial is adorable.
I love the versatility and simple beauty of a Ball mason jar, I mean they come in a wide variety of shapes and size and can be used for just about anything. Beyond canning you can make a salad to take to work for lunch, toss in some overnight oatmeal and throw it in the fridge, or store dry goods in the pantry. But if you are only using them for food you are doing yourself a great disservice. Fill them with cotton balls and cotton swabs and put them next to the sink, store pencils, paint brushes, or markers as they make great organizers!
Take it a step further and you can paint them and really turn them into something spectacular. With the popularity of buffalo plaid, I wanted to turn some into pretty candle holders and that is exactly what I did so I want to show you how as well.
Supplies Needed:
- Ball canning Jar
- 2 shades of tan acrylic craft paint
- White acrylic craft paint
- 1” foam brush
- Small detail paint brush
- Twine
- Hot glue/glue gun
Instructions:
If you want the paint to adhere well it’s best to give your jar a wipe down with a rag dipped in rubbing alcohol-this helps to remove all the dirt, oil, and fingerprints that might be on it. Then let it dry well before you begin the next step.
- Paint the entire outside of your jar white, you will probably need 2-3 coats. Be sure to let it dry between each coat and then give it a longer drying time after the last before you begin painting the checks.
- Once your base of white is dry you can use your 1” foam brush to paint light vertical stripes all the way around your jar, you don’t want to lay it on too thick. Use the lighter of your two tans for these stripes.
You don’t have to wait for it to dry on this next step, just make stripes horizontally crossing right over your vertical stripes on the jar using the same paint.
- Let your stripes dry, then take your darker tan and the small paintbrush and paint in the squares where your vertical and horizontal lines meet, this step is what really makes your checks pop.
- Finally, once all your paint is dry you can add a little extra touch by wrapping the threads at the top of the jar with twine and securing it with a bit of hot glue.
You can pop a votive or tealight candle inside or use a small string of battery operated led lights as well.
