4 Tips To Make Your Videos Look Professional
Now that we are in the age of social media, videos and photos are everything to not only share a brand but also your personality, ideas and creativity. If you want your videos to look more professional, there are a few tips to help you out. It’s actually easier than you might think. Why is it important? Having a professional look is more about your technique than just your tool so you don’t need to drop a lot of money on having expensive equipment. In short, it’s about paying attention to a few key details to help you out and stand out above the rest.
- Lighting – I would argue that this may be one of the biggest details when it comes to creating a video. Think about it! Lighting makes a huge difference in the quality of your video ( as well as photos ) so you want to make this a top priority when it comes to filming. If your light isn’t properly faced correctly, your video will look amateurish, despite it probably having a great script or incredible actors or subjects. How do you change this? For starters, the sun is the best light source for filming. A piece of advice would be to do your best to get your footage early in the morning or in the evening when the ligth has a softer feel to it. Filming something during the middle of the day has the light coming from overhead and can create some harsh shadows on your subject. If you do need to film during the day for other reasons, try to do it on a cloudy day or find some shade for softer lighting.
- Have Clear Audio – Audio matters a lot to your audience, being able to hear the dialogue or understand the joke that your character’s are pitching. That being said, it would be wise to invest in a good microphone as your first piece of equipment that you purchase. Some of the best ones are actually affordable as well from about $100-$200. Check sales as well as some decent options are great for under $100 if you are on a tight budget. When it comes to your microphone, hold it close to the subject and be aware of any background noise that might come through such as wind or busy traffic that can interfere with the audio.
- Rule Of Thirds – One the most basic rules of filming is what’s called the rule of thirds. Imagine that you have a 3 x 3 grid laying over what you are filming. Instead of placing your subject in the middle of the shot, you should place them along the lines of the grid. The points where the lines intersect are strong areas of focus so this helps situate the elements of your video. Don’t worry, you don’t have to follow this for every frame. It’s just a good idea to keep in the back of your mind as you continue to learn and grow while filming and editing.
- Making Everyone Comfortable – If you are the one on camera or you have someone else that may seem uncomfortable, there are a few tips that can help. For starters, try to remain as calm as possible and it’s ok to take a few practice takes before you start filming for good. Make sure that you smile to relax and make the audience and crew filming relax with you. If you are fidgety, use props to help you keep your hands occupied. The last piece of advice would be to practice, practice, practice. Watch the footage, take notes and work on what needs to be improved.
