How to Start a Capsule Wardrobe

If you're thinking about starting a capsule wardrobe, you have come to the right place. Capsule wardrobes can save you money and support the environment by moving away from fast-fashion alternatives. The good news is that creating a capsule wardrobe is easier than you might think.

Basic Items

Building a capsule wardrobe isn't easy; it's a bit like budget planning; it takes time and discipline to work it all out and put the right pieces in place. The good news is that most people aren't starting from scratch; you can start your capsule wardrobe right away by using existing clothing.

Create two sections of the wardrobe, one for capsule items and the other for the charity store, do the same with your drawers. Now monitor your clothing for a month and pare everything down to the essential items for your capsule wardrobe; this is your foundational starting point.

Lifestyle Items

Most people assume that a capsule wardrobe is mundane and uninteresting and that you need to have a strong ethical mindset to keep one successful, but that isn't the case. In fact, a capsule wardrobe can be interesting, colorful, and fit with whatever lifestyle you happen to have.

If going to parties on the weekend has become a thing of the past for you, chances are you don't need the party shoes and dresses that you wore so often in the past. Why not sell them to the next generation in favor of some colorful blazers that work with almost any capsule item?

Avoid Trends

Trends come and go, which is why they are not the best fit for a capsule wardrobe; the idea of a capsule wardrobe is that it can supply you with appropriate styles for any occasion without having to invest in new clothing and accessories all the time. But you don't have to avoid trends.

If a trend speaks to your personal style, there's no harm in buying an item for your wardrobe; that said, you might want to replace an existing item at the same time. Running a capsule wardrobe is all about economy and efficiency; it trains you to be selective with your choices.

Clear Out

After spending some time arranging your clothing into items you want to keep and ones you want to give away, it's time to clear out. At this stage, you should have a good idea of what you wear most often and the pattern of occasions in your life. It will take a month or two to organize.

Clearing out your clothing can be an emotional task, but you need to remember your initial motivation; creating a capsule wardrobe trains you to be more disciplined with your clothes buying, makes your shopping more ethical, saves you money, and means you have clothing.

Buy Smart

On the subject of sustainable fashion, a capsule wardrobe is the best practice. After having a capsule wardrobe for a short time, you will soon start to notice your ability to source ethical brands and fashion items and make more shred choices about the fashion items you choose.
