How to Make Your Rugs Last Longer

Area rugs are more than just a temporary way to provide style and comfort to your home. As essential home decor pieces, these rugs often get worn out faster than other types of design elements, especially if they’re in a high-traffic area. Luckily there are ways you can use to help make your rugs last longer, so you don’t need to constantly replace them.

Treat Stains Properly

No matter what type of material your rug is made of, it’s important to address any spills immediately. The longer you wait, the harder it is to remove the unsightly blemish. Avoid rubbing the carpet when you wipe up a spill since this will only spread the stain. Instead, use a dabbing motion to blot up the liquid. If the stain remains, use a trusted cleaning agent on the rug.

Regularly Vacuum

You might think this tip is obvious, but vacuuming a rug can do more than just remove dust and debris. Vacuuming prevents fraying and damaged fibers from accumulating whenever you walk across the rug. Any debris found at the base of the rug causes friction whenever you walk across the rug, which damages the fibers. Also, vacuuming keeps the rug plush and plump by circulating the air throughout the fibers. If the rug is in a high-traffic area, consider vacuuming it twice a week; otherwise, once a week should work well, depending on its size.

Schedule Deep Cleaning

To keep your rug looking great throughout the year, you should have a regular deep cleaning conducted by a professional. Steam cleaning the rug can keep your area rug looking almost brand new as it can get rid of odors, dust, and ground-in dirt. You can schedule a deep clean around the holidays before your guests begin to arrive, so you can show off your home. If that sounds like too much maintenance, consider investing in a washable rug as an alternative.

Place a Pad Underneath

One way to prevent your area rug from wearing out too quickly is to place a rug pad underneath. You’ll notice that the friction that forms between the rug fibers and the hard floor surface crushes the fibers, leading to a flattened and worn-out look. It almost acts like a cushion, giving you additional softness. The pad also serves as a way for the rug to stay in place better as it prevents slippage.

Rotate Your Furniture

If your space allows, try to rotate your furniture regularly, which is about once every six months. Doing so can thwart premature wear and tear in certain areas, and it can help deal with potential fading and continuous pathway use. Keep in mind that every chair leg will cause divots in the rug, and over time even lightweight furniture can create marks.

No matter how much money you spend on an area rug, you want a product that will last. After all, you expect the rug to withstand lots of traffic, spills, and dirt. By following these steps, you can ensure that your rug will grace your home for years to come.
