Home decor has taken a bit of a backseat lately since we recently moved to a townhouse with a half bath on the first floor. We sacrificed space and got rid of nearly everything in the move. Our home is cozy, but it needs a bit of color. It also needs creative ways to add more space. We lack closets and shelves, so my wife encouraged me to help her create a Pinterest-worthy project to provide extra room in “her” bathroom.
To add extra space to our bathroom, we used one of the walls as a focal point for a crate. When installed properly, you can use this sturdy display to hold toiletries, decor, and supplies for your guests. This decor update was simple to do, but it created a big impact on our space. It adds two shelves above our towel rack, so we have extra room for whatever may need. Let’s walk through the steps to add extra space to your bathroom.
To get started, look for a crate (or build your own!). You can find unfinished crates just about anywhere since they are the new trendy option in home decor. You can use crates for storage, decor, tables, and more. I used chalk paint since it’s my wife’s favorite and dries nice. It gives a “weathered” look that fits in with our coastal decor in our home.
Once the crate is dry, it’s time to start hanging. This part may take a few trial and error steps, but it was a simple ten minute fix that offered a lot of options for our small half bathroom. We got all of our supplies at Target.
- Chalk paint
- 1 1/2″ screws
- Washers, optional
- With crate held in place (make sure it is level), drill a hole in each corner of the crate directly through wood and into the drywall.
- Remove crate and place screw anchors into holes.
- Hold crate back into same position as when you drilled holes (this will ensure all holes line up)
- Affix crate to wall with 1 1/2″ screws. Make sure to use screws with wide enough heads to secure the crate, otherwise use washers.
The crate is a sturdy option for your small spaces, and now it’s time to fill it with our bathroom essentials.
We wanted our home to look more put together for upcoming holiday guests, and this simple decor update makes our space more inviting and colorful. My wife is ALL about bright colors, and this matches her other teal decor perfectly. I think she was surprised I was able to do a Pinterest project perfectly without a lot of fuss.
