Everyone wants to be confident. Most of us fake it much of the time, as confidence isn’t easy to build, but no matter who it is, we all crave confidence. We crave feeling light and breezy and we crave feeling like we can conquer the world without the crippling anxiety and worry that comes with life. Those who say they don’t crave confidence are the people who are already bossing it – we ALL need a boost from time to time, though. Whether it’s body confidence or confidence within yourself, it’s hard to build and it takes time to get it right.
Body confidence is the one that we all focus on these days. Not because confidence standing up and talking to people in a conference isn’t hard to come by, but we live in a world dominated by superficial judgement. There are actual “beauty standards” that someone out there has devised, and we ALL live to them – it’s crazy! Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, Twitter – instant pictorials of our lives that involve us all ending up feeling like rubbish because we don’t match up. Why don’t we match up? Well, most of the time, it’s due to the fact that we cannot warp our features in the same way Photoshop can. The rest of the time it’s because we use other people as a yardstick by which we measure ourselves. People are afraid to go for job interviews because they feel they don’t look the part. Women are on horrific websites passing judgement on other women when we need to band together to destroy patriarchal views.
Body confidence is all about feeling confident and happy within yourself – no matter what. Whether you paid for a boob job or new veneers to feel more confident, that’s completely up to you. The point is that no matter what you look like, whether you have cellulite, you’re not the perfect size 8, you have bright veneers or you have your eyebrows Botox every month, you need to feel good about it. Embracing everything that you are is so important if you want to live a comfortable and stress-free life. Being happy with how you look is not easy, but the good news is that we have ten ways you can be more confident about that body you’re rocking. From the top of your head to the soles of your feet, you need to feel good about what you’re sporting. So, let’s take a look at how you can improve that confidence of yours!
- Redirect Your Focus
Why do you eat the salad on your plate? Why do you go to the gym three times a week? If it’s because you want to shrink your body down to be more palatable to the world around you, to snap better pictures for the ‘Gram, you need to readjust your priorities. You need to make sure that you are eating well and moving well for how it makes your body feel. If you feel less bloated because of salads, eat the salads. If you love the community in the gym, keep going. These things should make you feel good about yourself, and you can only feel good if you are working for your own reasons and not to meet the aesthetic expectations of anyone else. Redirecting why you are doing something will make a huge difference. Fixing your teeth with veneers, for example, will make you feel like you can offer a beautiful smile. It will make you want to smile where before you may have felt too low in confidence to do so.
- Thank Your Body
Believe me when I tell you that sometimes, you just have to look down at yourself and thank yourself for existing. Look at you! You are a miracle and you were supposed to exist. Spending your life hating the body you have is not the way to spend it. Life moves so fast that before you know it, you’ve spent your whole life punishing your body for the way that it looks rather than celebrating all of your perfections and imperfections. Sure, no one wants to feel uncomfortable in themselves, and that’s the only reason you should make any changes to your body. If it’s going to make you feel good, and you are doing it to feel better, do it. Otherwise, thank your legs for supporting you. Thank your body for functioning healthily.
- Let Go Of Competition
How many times a week do you spend time scrolling through Instagram? And in that time, how often do you compare yourself to the pictures posted? The truth is every single day. We see hair we wish we had and we see legs we want to exercise to death to have. Almost all women blame their lack of body confidence on the poor self-image of other women. If your friend sat down and listed all of their insecurities, you wouldn’t one-up them with “yes, but MY body…”. You would pay them a compliment and make them feel good. Instead of comparing and competing, start feeling good about yourself and tell other women how well they look. It’ll change your mindset dramatically!
- Chill Out!
If you wouldn’t tell your sister or your best friend that her thighs were dimpled like porridge, why would you tell yourself the same thing? Chill out and stop insulting yourself. Give that inner voice of yours a name and tell them to go away!
- Embrace Positive Thinking
Grab a pen and paper and write down all of the things that you like about your body. Do you have long, slender hands? Are you lucky enough to have a beautiful mouth? Are your teeth sparkly since you got your new veneers? No matter what it is, write it down. Then, anytime time someone gives you a compliment, write that down, too.
- Relax & Meditate
One of the best ways to help you to accept the negative thoughts and let them go is to meditate. You can process the fact that these thoughts are just thoughts, and that they are not real. Your opinion of yourself has been warped by years of societal pressure and the instant advent of social media. Let them go and use meditation to help you to do it.
- Worship Your Body
There is no need to set up an altar and get on your hands and knees, but you do need to give yourself a little self-worship from time to time. A foot massage, a spa day, a face mask – give your body a little love! Go on a yoga retreat or a fitness holiday and spend time feeling the sun kissing your skin. All of these things are going to serve to make you feel amazing, so why not start embracing them? A little pampering never did anyone any harm!
- Upgrade Your Clothing
Those shapeless clothes that are two sizes too big? They have to go! You need to work out what will make you feel good and sometimes, you have to get a little brave. Go clothes shopping with your girlfriends and inject a little colour into your life.
- Work On Your Posture
It’s the fastest way to feel good about your body. Stop slouching and sit up straight. It’ll make a huge difference to the way that you think about yourself while feeling taller and appearing slimmer.
- Embrace Perspective
You do not need to shrink into smaller spaces and clothing to be worthy of love and life. You have to remember that you deserve self-love. You only have one body and you should love the one you have while it’s still healthy and moving well.
