When Should You Call In an Emergency Plumber?

As a homeowner, it can be challenging to try to figure out what is an emergency situation that requires immediate assistance from a professional and what types of home repairs can wait until normal business hours. When it comes to your plumbing system, you may find yourself wondering whether you need emergency plumbing services. Here are a few plumbing issues that you may experience that are considered plumbing emergencies.

You Have a Frozen Pipe

If you have a frozen pipe, you need to contact an emergency plumber as soon as possible. When temperatures dip below the freezing mark, water that is sitting in your pipes can freeze. When water freezes, it expands. This can put a lot of pressure on your pipes, and may lead to the pipe cracking or bursting. The average person does not know how to safely thaw out frozen pipes, whereas an emergency plumber does. A plumber will use tools to safely and quickly thaw the pipe, helping to prevent the pipe from cracking or bursting.

You Suspect or Know You Have a Leak in Your Pipes

If you have a leak in your pipes, you need to contact an emergency plumber immediately. Water leaks can cause a lot of damage to your home or property. As the water leaks, it can damage structural wood supports, beams, and trusses in your home. Water can also damage drywall, insulation, and electrical work. Lastly, water can lead to mold growth in your home. As such, you need a plumber to find the leak and solve the problem quickly, to prevent more extensive problems that can be caused by a leak.

You Have a Clog You Cannot Get Rid of On Your Own

It is fairly common for clogs in your plumbing system to occur. When a clog happens, you can attempt to snake the line, plunge the clog, pour hot water down a drain or use a combination of vinegar and baking soda to break up the clog. However, if you cannot get rid of the clog on your own, you should call in a plumber. You may have a collapsed plumbing line, roots may be growing in your outgoing sewer line, or something may have gone down the drain that should not have been sent down the drain. A professional can determine what the issue is and repair it.

Sewage is Backing Up Into Your Home

Your plumbing system is designed so that clean water comes through your water lines into your home and dirty or used water and waste are carried out of the sewer lines. However, if there is a problem with your sewer lines and they start to back up, sewage can start to come up through the drains in your sinks, showers, bathtubs, and even your water appliances. If you notice that sewage is backing up into your home, you are experiencing a plumbing emergency and need to contact an emergency plumber right away to diagnose and repair the problem.

You Have Low Water Pressure

The final reason why you may need to contact an emergency plumber is that you are experiencing low water pressure throughout your home. If you have low water pressure from one shower or one sink, it is not an emergency and a regular plumber can be contacted during normal business hours. However, if the problem is widespread throughout your home, it may indicate that there is a collapsed water line, a leak in your water line, or a clog in your plumbing vent. All of these issues need to be corrected right away.

If you have a frozen pipe, if you have a leak in your pipes, if you have a clog that you cannot get rid of yourself, if sewage is backing up into your home, or if you have experienced a drop in water pressure throughout your whole home, you are experiencing a plumbing emergency. If you are experiencing a plumbing emergency, you should contact emergency plumbing services to help you with the plumbing issues you are experiencing.
