Latest Fast Food Trends
Fast food has been around for many years, notably since the automobile became a popular form of transportation in the United States during the 1940s and 1950s. These quick-serve establishments provide meals to people on the go, whether they are completing a cross-country road trip or require food driving home after a late night at the office. Like all businesses, the restaurant industry must keep up with the latest trends in order to attract and maintain customers. Here are some of the latest trends that have taken the fast food industry by storm.

Ghost Kitchens
A Reef ghost kitchen is an establishment that prepares food for customers without a public presence, such as a sign or parking lot. These venues save money by operating in a small space with no dining area, exclusively making food for people to consume in another location. They also save money by being located towards the outskirts of town, since there is no need for them to be in a central location with large numbers of passersby. Ghost kitchens often make money by working with food delivery apps or partnering with an establishment that does not make their own food, like a bar or concert hall.
Plant-Based Options
There are several reasons why someone may choose to eat less meat or no meat at all. There has been a significant increase in the number of plant-based options that fast food outlets serve, which makes it easier for more people, including but not limited to vegans and vegetarians, to eat on the road. For example, KFC is now offering a plant-based chicken made by Beyond Meat, a company that produces plant-based mock meats that look and taste quite similar to the real thing. McDonald's, which is famous for its beef patties, is introducing a McPlant burger for those who wish to cut back on their consumption of red meat. It is imperative that restaurants offer food options to a customer base with changing tastes, and this is precisely what the industry is doing by providing new, plant-based mock meats and cheeses.
Healthier Choices
In addition to cutting back on meats high in saturated fats, consumers are looking at other ways to make healthier decisions when they eat out. No longer is fast food synonymous with greasy, unhealthy food. Subway's marketing strategy, for instance, focuses on its use of fresh ingredients and the promotion of its low-fat, low-calorie sandwich options. Taco Bell's website has a section for people who are counting calories or avoiding gluten to see which menu items are best for them to order.
Customization
Many dining establishments, including fast-casual restaurants, are continuing to offer more and more options for customers to customize their orders. Build-your-own items can increase loyalty among diners who enjoy changing their meals and experimenting with different ingredients each time they visit the establishment.
As is typical with trends, fast food places will drop the trends that cause them to lose money and keep the ones that help the business. Keep an eye out for these up-and-coming trends.
