When you know the risks involved in anything that can increase your chances of getting a disease, you are worried about it. The same goes for breast cancer. Having the risk factors does not mean that you will surely get the disease, but it can help you to take corrective measures right away to avoid it completely. Below are some of the habits that you may be following in your daily life that can increase the risk of getting breast cancer.

Consumption Of Alcohol

When it comes to alcohol there are several reasons why you should stop drinking it right away. One of the reasons would be that it is linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. Even if you have just one glass of an alcoholic beverage every day, you are still more prone to be in the risk group as compared to those who do not consume alcohol at all. Women who drink more than 2 to 3 drinks are at a much higher risk. The best solution is not to reduce your alcohol intake but to completely give it up. It does not only risk messing up your health but also your personal and professional life. 

Being Overweight

Being overweight is even more dangerous for women after they have had menopause. They must make it a point to get checked at breast care center regularly as they have a higher risk of getting breast cancer. This is because before menopause, the ovary makes estrogen and the fat tissue only enables it to make a part of the total amount. After one has had menopause, the ovaries will completely stop making estrogen. The process of making estrogen will then come from fat tissue and when you have too much of it, then the level of estrogen will increase. This simultaneously increases the risk of breast cancer. At the same time, being overweight means that you will have a higher level of blood insulin that is linked to the risk of other types of cancers as well. Exercising regularly and following a healthy diet can help you to maintain your weight. 

Being Physical Inactive

Being active brings in both mental and physical benefits. When you follow a physically active routine regularly, you will reduce the risk of getting breast cancer. This is even more true for women who are past menopause. Many women nowadays lead a very hectic life and feel that they cannot give enough time to physical exercise. However, you only need to dedicate a few hours every week. Of course, if you work out more, it will only bring more added benefits. Physical activity helps to maintain body weight, reduce inflammation, balance hormones and help you to be more energetic. You can start with moderate and brisk exercises for 30 minutes to one hour daily or go for a more intense workout 3 to 4 times weekly. 

Not Having Children And Not Breastfeeding

Women over the age of 30, who have not had any children, do tend to be in the higher risk group for breast cancer. Breastfeeding also reduces the risk of cancer as it tends to reduce a womanโ€™s total number of menstrual cycles in their lifetime. 

Using Birth Control Products

As some of the birth control measures involve using hormones, it can put women who use them in the risk group. Women who use oral contraceptives are at a higher risk than those who have never taken them. However, if you stop taking the oral contraceptives then within 10 years the risk is eliminated. Birth control shots that are usually given every 3 months also are risky as well as implants. 

Hormone Therapy

Many women who have menopause opt for hormone therapy which is a combination of estrogen and progesterone. This helps to reduce the symptoms of menopause and prevent the thinning of bones also known as Osteoporosis. Bioidentical hormone therapy is also alternatively used by women to treat the symptoms of menopause. Though these therapies help to alleviate the symptoms, they can put you in the risk group. Before taking any such therapy, you must consult a specialist to ensure that they provide you lower doses that work for you but reduce the chances of putting you in the risk group for breast cancer.ย 

To prevent any such problems from taking place in your future, you must make it a point to give attention to your health at all stages of life. Go for regular check-ups even if you do not feel unwell as well as follow a healthy lifestyle as that plays a vital role in preventing breast cancer.
