Hereโ€™s a list of 7 quick tips to help you lower your energy bills each month:

Adjust Your Thermostat Setting

You can actually save up to 10% of your current heating and cooling costs with this easy hack. All you have to do is change the setting to a constant of 7 to 10 degrees for about 8 hours each day. Youโ€™ll basically be making it warmer during summer and just a little colder when winter comes. You can make the change when you wonโ€™t necessarily be affected by the change in temperature, like when you are away from home or even when you are asleep.

Changing the thermostat setting is one of the easiest hacks to reduce those enormous bills you get every month. And if your thermostat is smart, then you can even preset it to make the change at the times you want it to.

If You Are Not Using An Appliance, Unplug It

When you leave things plugged in while they are not being used, they consume energy too, and this contributes to your overall energy consumption and inflates your energy bill every month. Even something as minute as the light bulb contributes to this. To fix this, you need to make it a point to switch off the light when you are not using it and unplug all the appliances you are not using. Or even better, you can consider going solar, as this can help you save costs on energy bills. There are several solar system packages from Shoalhaven Solar and many other good solar developers to choose from. So, you’ve got plenty of options if you choose to go solar.

Put Your Household Appliances To Good Use

A good place to start is the dishwasher. You can actually regulate how much water it consumes. The amazing thing is that the government already regulates how much water modern dishwashers consume; itโ€™s currently capped at a maximum of five gallons of water. This means if youโ€™re buying a dishwasher, then it was already built in compliance with this cap. And this works well with conserving your water and thus reducing your water bill.

Get An Electricity Audit

You can actually get this for free; a lot of electric companies give free audits after room-by-room examination of your home. Theyโ€™ll use this process to help you figure out which part of your house consumes or wastes the most energy. This insight will then let you know which roomsโ€™ energy consumption rate you need to reduce. If your electric company doesnโ€™t offer this service, you can actually do it yourself.

Control Your Water Heater

Even though a lot of water heaters are automatically set at 140 degrees, you actually only need it to be at a maximum of 120 degrees.  The 140 degrees setting even makes you consume more energy than you need to, the best way to cut down on this is to reduce it to 120 degrees. But before you try to adjust it, make sure to check for the manual and get a good understanding of how it works, or hire a professional to do it.

Monitor Peak Trends

There are times of the day or year when the demand for electricity significantly increases across different households. For example, during the winter and summer, people use their heaters and air conditioners more, thus driving up those bills.

To leverage on this, some electricity companies offer time of use plans which basically increase the rates during those peak times and reduce them after the peak time. The best hack to make this help you is to use the appliances that consume a lot of electricity during the off-peak hours. This way you avoid paying the high rates caused by peak hours.

Change Your Air Filters On Time

Make out a schedule for changing or cleaning your air filters to avoid it getting clogged by all the dirt it catches. When you donโ€™t change it soon enough, all the debris caught gets into the HVAC system and terribly slows it down, reducing its effectiveness. But replacing these air filters at the time can reduce the energy consumption by as much as 5% to 15%.
