Minty Key Lime Iced Tea
There is nothing more southern than a cold glass of iced tea. Growing up in Florida, the heat during the summer just cannot be beat. While we might cool off with our toes in the sand at a beach or at a nearby park’s splash pad, it still doesn’t do enough to cool off. We love to sip on sweet iced tea on warm summer days, and we use the Florida sunshine to help brew our own special blend of tea!
If you’re never made “sun tea” before, you’re in for a treat. It’s the kind of recipe that we make on lazy Sundays when we hang out by the pool or head to the deck to go fishing. We use tea to celebrate our weekends and enjoy our sunny summer days. To get started with this simple recipe, head to Walmart to pick up Bigelow American Breakfast blend tea.
I chose the lemon variety since I knew I wanted to make a refreshing citrus brew. I love the flavors of lemon and lime, but I especially the flavor of key lime. Since I was born and raised in Florida, I have a special connection to key limes. Whether it’s key lime pie or a key lime margarita, there is something oh so sweet about those adorable little limes! When we head to Key West, we almost always make sure to bring home a few key lime pies since there is nowhere better to get them! Because of my love for key limes, I wanted to try to make an iced tea where they were the star.
To get started, I used a glass gallon pitcher full of cold water. I then added about ten Bigelow tea bags. Bigelow Tea is All American: 100% American made by an American Family. Did you know? Bigelow Tea’s Charleston Tea Plantation is America’s largest working tea garden. Guests are invited to the Charleston Tea Plantation for weddings, tours and even a variety of music festivals. Depending on your flavor preferences, you can add other fruits or spices. I wanted to keep it citrus themed with a bit of refreshing mint, so I let the tea bag offer the lemon flavor. I topped the pitcher off with sliced key limes and fresh sprigs of mint.
I was actually pretty excited to use this particular mint since it came from my new garden! I am the worst at getting plants and herbs to grow, but I convinced myself that this time would be different. I longed for fresh herbs for my cooking, so I got it together and set up a gardening area on my patio. With my husband’s help, we now have thyme, cilantro, and mint!
I use mint in a lot of my infused water recipes, but I’ve never topped off my tea with it. I have to say that this will be a new favorite recipe!
Once your gallon jug or pitcher is full of water, several tea bags (I use about six to eight usually), and topped off with refreshing mint and key limes, close it. Let it sit in the sun for a few hours to brew for maximum flavor!
This sun tea recipe is perfect for busy Fourth of July weekends since you can prepare the tea in the morning before your guests arrive. Once your July 4th festivities begin, your tea will be ready to serve. Your guests will love your creativity and ask for more!
