With two large rescue dogs, we have made a promise to stay active with our pets. Both of our dogs like long walks, days at the dog park, and lazy afternoons rolling around in the grass in our backyard. Dogs are a commitment, and if you are a pet owner, you know that shouldn't be taken lightly. Not everyone can head to a dog park or has a large yard to roam around in, but you can get creative to stay active with your pets. I have a few ideas to help you surprise your furry friends with outdoor activities, and how you can include them on more of your adventures!
How to Stay Active With Your Pets
Include your pets on your errands within reason. One way that you can do this is by shopping at dog-friendly stores. We headed to Tractor Supply Co. since it is a one-stop shop for all our rural needs, including pet food. It has the best prices for Purina products, and your leashed pets can go with you!
We shopped during Purina Days, which is an annual event, and it happens in March. This is a MAJOR opportunity to take advantage of savings and pick up everything you need for the year. This is the 5th year for the Purina Days Promotion, and your shopping experience is going to be special.
Because this store offers everything you need for your rural lifestyle, you can skip special dog food trips. You can grab everything you need here. We looked specifically for large bags of pet food and canned options to add variety to their diet.
I grabbed Purina ONE® SmartBlend® Chicken & Rice Formula Dry Dog Food in a 40-pound bag (and I saved $5!), along with Purina® Pro Plan® Chicken & Rice Wet Dog Food. When you buy a large bag, you can get 2 cans free!
Plus, look for the FSI and in-store savings. The FSI is in the paper and is running from March 28th to April 2nd.
More Pet Care Tips
Create your own dog park. This is something my dogs and son LOVE to do. We invested in a few cones, hoops, and toys like squishy balls to create our own environment for dog play.
When we adopted our dog Lucian, we were amazed to discover how well-trained he was. He knows when to run, when to stop, and he will leap and love on you too!
He enjoys being active, and for our simple tutorial to being more active with your pet, we wanted to give him the dog park of his dreams. If you have a yard or space you can use, this will be a lot of fun!
Visiting your local dog park? Check their website or call ahead for rules. Many dog parks in our area require us to be “registered” to attend so they can verify our pets have up-to-date vaccinations. Every city and state is different, so it is important to be aware of your area guidelines.
Don't forget water. Not only do you need water to drink nearby to hydrate your dog on a hot day, dogs LOVE to splash in the water. Consider a children's pool or a sprinkler.
Besides including your pet on errands, building your own simple dog park, and encouraging your pet to play in the cool water during a hot spring or summer season, you can stay active with your pet by being consistent. Ensure that you feed and walk your pets at the same time every day, and don't forget to ask for help if you need it. Finding reliable dog sitters or dog walkers to provide attention for your pet when you are away is an important part of being a dog parent.
Plus, your dog will look forward to meal time when you provide options that they enjoy. We have used Purina for many years now, and our dogs have come to expect it.
