Memorial Day Weekend is here so it’s time to break out the grills and start marinading meats. For a fresh recipe for a weekend BBQ or party, try a grilled Cornish game hen. I used my favorite chicken marinade to bring flavor to this dish, and I paired it with a cilantro lime rice and a cocktail with a bit of a kick. Cornish game hens are a fun twist to bring poultry to your meal plan without having to add an entire chicken to your cart!
To create this dish, I headed to Walmart Supercenter to grab Tyson Cornish Game Hens. They came in a pack of two and were located in a large freezer case near the meat department.
I then needed some soy sauce to complete the marinade, and I found Kikkoman Soy Sauce in the Asian food section.
I also snagged a Kikkoman Sriracha sauce for the marinade as well.
Kikkoman is an all-purpose seasoning and it was a perfect addition to the marinade we were making.
First, let these hens completely thaw. It might take a while, but be patient! I promise, it’s worth it.
Cornish Game Hen Recipe
We seasoned the defrosted hens with Kikkoman Soy Sauce, light tasting olive oil, lime juice, sriracha, and red pepper flakes.

My husband took over this part, and he sliced the hens in half lengthwise.
We brushed on more of the sauce and headed to the grill.
And, we were off!
My husband flipped and monitored them while they grilled, and I got to work prepping an easy rice side dish to pair with this.
I was looking for a no-fuss side that wouldn’t take away from the flavor of the main course. I decided to use white rice with cilantro and lime juice. I’m not going to lie, I kept it easy. I used instant rice and stirred in a few tablespoons of lime juice and added cilantro after the rice was prepared.
- 2 cornish game hens, thawed
- 1 bottle of soy sauce
- 2 cups of light tasting olive oil
- 1 cup of lime juice
- 4 tbsp of sriracha
- red pepper flakes
- In a large dish, coat hens in soy sauce, olive oil, and lime juice.
- Brush sriracha and top with red pepper flakes.
- Flip hens at least once and brush the marinade atop each hen at least once or twice.
- After marinating, cut hens in half lengthwise with a sharp butcher's knife or kitchen shears.
- Add to a heated grill.
- Brush on the remainder of the marinade.
- Flip hens a few times and sear them over high heat to get a nice crispy texture on the outside.
- Make sure the internal temperature is 165 degrees.
- Serve and enjoy!

I was impressed with the presentation of the dish, and the flavor of the hen. It was crisp and seasoned to perfection. I’m not just saying that because it is a review. I genuinely was impressed with this. And, how easy was it? From start to finish it did not take an extraordinarily long amount of time, and everyone in my family enjoyed it.
Yes, even my toddler had a few pieces and came back for more. I wasn’t sure how he would enjoy it since it was his first time eating it, but he loved it.
